Portland after Dark: How Will You Get Turnt in PDX?
You got Throwback Star!

You like rolling up your sleeves and prefer bars that spin vinyl. Start your night by gaming at Ground Kontrol, a barcade in operation since 1999 in Old Town that recently expanded to house nearly 100 machines! Head across the river for a bite at the wildly popular Nong’s Khao Man Gai for a comforting meal of Thai chicken and rice. Stop by Spirit of 77 for a frosty pint before walking to catch a Blazers game at the Moda Center. If you’re looking for one last stop, end at Doug Fir Lounge, a cabin-inspired lounge and music venue with an old-school photo booth.

You’re ready to jump into Portland’s increasingly diverse, dynamic, and eclectic music scene. Warm up your chords by booking a private karaoke booth at Voicebox, or grace the public with your pipes at Chopsticks. Next stop by the Alberta Arts District for a visit to Solae’s Lounge—an excellent Black-owned jazz bar that offers a menu of Southern fried catfish and chicken to boot. If you’re still in a musical mood—and we know you are—catch a show at Mississippi Studios, another beloved venue. End your evening with a night cap at Moloko, which is full of fish tanks, sweet sounds, and tasty cocktails.

You got Queen of Turnt!

Your level of turnt is off the charts. It’s not a question of if you’re dancing but where. Pre-gaming at glam rooftop bar Departure is a must. Graze on snacks and drinks as you overlook downtown Portland before grabbing a steamy bowl of phở or a vermicelli dish at Lúc Lắc. If grinding is your preferred style of dance, Dirty offers two rooms for EDM and hip-hop. NYX Nightclub, mere blocks away, is two stories and regularly books Portland’s best musicians of color. Did all that dancing work up an appetite? Grab a giant slice from the curbside window at Pizza Slut.

You got Mellow Mama!

You’re not opposed to exploring the city at night, but it must be low-key. Since you’re likely a patron of the arts, the Portland Art Museum is a great evening trip (and most Fridays are $5 after 5 pm)! In the mood for a movie? Try the ultra-cozy Living Room Theaters. If you’re in a curious mood instead, OMSI After Dark, a monthly 21+ evening of science and drinks, is your scene—just be sure to book early. Finally, enjoy a cozy dinner and wine at Italian eatery Nostrana before stargazing at Mt. Tabor Park, Portland’s dormant volcano with a killer viewpoint.

Strangeness reigns supreme, and you can’t wait to rock that “Keep Portland Weird” sweatshirt. Earn your stripes by getting an early start at the Freakybuttrue Peculiarium, a museum and shop of oddities. It’s $5 to get in, but if you don a particularly spectacular costume, it’s free. For a spooky meal, nosh on a home-style pie from the allegedly haunted Old Town Pizza. Next, take a tour of the Shanghai Tunnels for an excursion underground and into Portland’s history. Check out the clown-themed rooms and strong drinks at Funhouse Lounge before catching the midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Clinton Street Theater—happening every Saturday since 1978!
